Attention readers:
Some of the material in this post may be “not safe for work” due to explicit
content. Reader discretion is advised.
Each
month we publish the most recent Podtrac podcast rankings for publishers and
individual shows. But how do you really know that the shows on the list are the
most popular. Where are the porn podcasts?
Historically,
pornography has been the most important driver of new media adaption. For
example, porn video-cassettes established the VCR market and was a big factor
why the VHS format surpassed the Beta format. The “shopping cart” system that
is so ubiquitous today was designed and perfected by online porn merchants.
Is
the same true with podcasts? As everyone knows, podcasting is now hitting its
stride. Advertising Age says 57-million
Americans listen to podcasts monthly, up 23% from the previous year [link].
We
will get to sexy podcasts in just a moment (I am such tease), but first The News:
Public
radio publishers continue to dominate the Podtrac charts.
In September, compared
with August, NPR, WNYC and PRX finished 1, 2, 3 in the publisher rankings.
PRX
had the largest gain in US Unique Monthly Audience, up 7% in the past month.
The
biggest gainer in the top ten was Barstool Sports, up 11%, powered by their most popular podcast Pardon My Take
[link].
According
to its promotional material, Pardon My
Take is the loudest and most correct
sports takes in the history of the spoken word. Hosts Big Cat & PFT Commenter shoot-the-breeze
with guests while lampooning traditional sports media, particularly ESPN and several other
notable personalities such as Al Michaels.
To
me, Pardon My Take is like a
commercial radio Morning Zoo type of
show with fart jokes and silly characters. It sounds like the sports as
reported by Beavis and Butthead. The
dialogue is occasionally profane and naughty but it does not get naked or
dirty. That is where porn podcasts expose their libidos.
EVERYBODY’S GOT SOMETHING
TO HIDE EXCEPT FOR ME AND MY MONKEY
It
is difficult to find reliable metrics for porn podcasts because there is no
"Podtrac" keeping track of the metrics. But a quick check on Google shows there are many in
distribution, including something for any taste.
I
don’t know where the “line” is between podcasts that are explicit and ones that
are pornographic, but chart makers like Podtrac must make that distinction. Pardon My Take is on the chart and Guys We Fu*ked
–claiming 10 million monthly downloads – is not.
Let’s
look a couple of the most popular sex-oriented podcast, plus the podcast that I
feel is the best in the genre.
Corinne Fisher & Krystyna Hutchinson |
The
premise of Guys We Fu*ked [link], is
pretty simple. Hosts Corinne Fisher & Krystyna Hutchinson interview men
they have slept with and talk in great detail about what they liked and what
they didn’t. The storytelling often focuses on sex in nontraditional locations
such as doing the deed in public.
Guys… has a sex-positive attitude,
as in lets do it. But some shows have
dealt with serious topics such as STDs, rape and sexual addiction.
Sandra |
Another
very popular porn-ish podcast is Sex Nerd
Sandra [link].
Host Sandra Daugherty is a legitimate sex educator. It sounds
like a 21st century version of Dr. Ruth.
The point of the podcasts
is for you and your partner(s) to achieve better orgasms.
By
far the best sex oriented podcast I've heard is Kinsey
Confidential [link], produced by The Kinsey Institute at Indiana University.
Kinsey Confidential is a no-frills
question and answer program that is not afraid to call sexual parts by their
slang names and ask provocative questions.
The
Kinsey folks pride themselves on dealing with topics that many people are too
embarrassed to talk about. An example is the most-recent show: Can Dry Semen On My Fingers Make Me
Pregnant?
The
answer is maybe, so wash your hands
after having sex, please.
Kinsey Confidential should be a syndicated
public radio program. It is nicely produced, features fact-based information
and it is fun to listen-to, in a voyeuristic way.
