MY BACK PAGES: "Video Killed the Radio Star"

We are taking a break this week from blogging this week to do consulting work for a new client. New Spark News posts will return on Monday 8/20.

This week we are featuring some of our favorite oldies about radio. Most of these songs come from the period when we worked in album rock radio. These songs meant sometime to us then and still do today.

THE BUGGLES
Video Killed the Radio Star

When MTV first started in the early 1980s I owned and managed a FM album rock station in the Black Hills of South Dakota called K-SKY. At the time, we took the message of this song literally.

Ironically, video didn’t kill radio. Today people say streaming audio will kill radio. I bet it won’t because radio is adept and noncom radio is free, ubiquitous and leaves no telltale digital footprints.

Today MTV is best known for cheezy reality shows, dumb sit-coms and phony celebrities. Name one VJ working in the biz today.

  1. Radio is foreground. TV is not. The only successful foreground TV format these days is Cable News & Commentary.
