Plans
by WLRN radio and television to create a new nonprofit organization to operate
the stations hit a snag this week.
A key committee of the Miami-Dade County
School Board pulled the plan from discussion at a meeting scheduled for
Wednesday (12/4).
The
School Board is the licensee of WLRN radio and WLRN-TV, a PBS affiliate.
WLRN
is seeking a to hire a management team that to start a new
nonprofit organization to consolidate and operate the public media outlets in South Florida.
One of two entities seeking the management contract, Friends of WLRN, objected to the School District's inaction and said it will submit a detailed
complaint within 10 days.

South Florida PBS (WLRN-TV) is also
seeking the contract.
The School Board favors South Florida PBS.
Friends of
WLRN question South Florida’s qualifications
to be a bidder. Friends also alleges
that the School District's process is biased.
According
to a story on WLRN’s website [link], cost is a major issue in the dispute.
South Florida PBS is asking for a
“management fee” up to 5% of the revenue generated by WLRN. Friends
proposal does not ask for a “management fee.”
The
Miami-Dade School District has not indicated if or when they will reconsider
the applications.
WLRN
operates two radio channels.
WLRN-FM is a full-time NPR News/Talk station and WLRN
HD2 is full-time Classical music station.
The Classical format is not repeated
on a FM translator.
Also
in the November PPM ratings, Jazz WDNA had nice gains compared to October.
According
to Nielsen Audio’s November ratings, NPR News/Talk KUOW is the number one radio
news source in Seattle-Tacoma.
KUOW has a larger AQH share and more estimated
weekly listeners than commercial News/Talk station KIRO-FM and commercial News
station KOMO AM/FM.
Also
in SeaTac, NPR News and Jazz KNKX increased its AQH share and weekly listeners
in November compared to previous months.
In
Minneapolis-St, Paul NPR News/Talk KNOW remains the top radio news voice in
both AQH share and estimated weekly listeners.
Commercial
News/Talk WCCO (November: 4.2 AQH, 240,000 cume) fell back to earth after a
“baseball bump” earlier in 2019. Conservative Talk KTLK had a 2.9 AQH and
210,800.
Contemporary
Christian KTIS-FM continues to grow its AQH share. They have gained almost two
rating points since August. KTIS-FM is a truly great station that thrives on
local engagement.
Jazz
KBEM is not currently subscribing to the Nielsen ratings.
Colorado
Public Radio’s news flagship KCFR continues to be the top radio news source in
Denver-Boulder. Commercial News/Talk KOA had a 2.5 AQH share and 253,800
estimated listeners. KOA had a “baseball bump” during the Rockies season.
The
biggest noncom mover was CPR’s Adult Alternative Indie 102.3. They have pulled away from The Colorado Sound.
KUVO’s
The Drop is still looking for
listeners.
South Florida PBS is the licensee of PBS member station WPBT and WXEL. WXEL is/was the secondary PBS station for West Palm Beach, but sold their license in the spectrum auction and merged with South Florida PBS to share channels.
