2019 PRNDI CONFERENCE PREVIEW • WILL “PRNDI” BECOME “PMJA”?

Our Reader Survey continues through this week.  We appreciate the many people who have already taken the survey.  If you haven’t, please do so now. Your opinions in our survey will help us plan our future.  You can reach the survey by clicking on this link:

When the members of the Public Radio News Directors (PRNDI) gather June 14-16 in Washington, DC, they will have at least one major decision to make:

Will the organization expand its focus and take a new name – the Public Media Journalists Association (PMJA)?

The outcome is not known.

A similar change was defeated in 2016. Then, former PRNDI President George Bodarky pushed for PRNDI to change its name to Association of Public Media Journalists (APMJ) PRNDI. Members who have voting privileges said “no way.”

“Voting members” is the key phrase. Then and now, each member STATION, not individual, has one vote no matter how many people from the member station participate in PRNDI. Generally, the News Director of a member station casts the one vote.

In other words, KWIT in Sioux City has one vote, the same as WBUR in Boston. According to Christine Paige Diers, Business Manager for PRNDI, this rule has not changed:

“Per our current bylaws, each member station receives one vote at our business meeting. The change that is being put before the membership at this time is only for a name change.  We are not planning to ask membership to change voting structure at this time.”

George Bodarky
The proposal failed in 2016.

It is tough to predict what the outcome will be in June.

There are 110 voting member stations.  Many of the News Directors were present in 2016.

Back in 2018 there was a debate about whether the word “radio” should remain in the organization’s name.

The vote will happen on Saturday (6/15) between 12:15pm and 2:30 at the PRNDI Business Meeting.

Read more about the proposed name change. PRNDI President Alicia Zuckerman and Executive Director Terry Gildea wrote an article for Current explaining the procedure and rationale for the changed. You can see it here. https://current.org/2019/04/prndi-proposing-name-change-reinventing-identity-to-serve-all-pubmedia-journalists/
