BIG LISTENING LOSSES FOR WQXR: NIELSEN AUDIO JANUARY PPM

PLEASE NOTE: In an earlier version of this post, January and November numbers for KMFA were inverted.  The correct info is below.  Thanks to Greg Kostraba for the heads up. Ken.

I’ve had the voices of my radio research mentors going through my mind: Don’t read too much into dramatic changes from book to book! So I will avoid shock and awe when reporting changes in classical music radio listening from the November PPMs to the January PPMs.

Still, a couple of the drops in listening in the chart below make go WTF.  Comparing the two months, WQXR lost 24% of its weekly unique listeners; KBAQ in Phoenix lost 23%.

I’d love to hear your opinions about the importance of these metrics.

  1. WABE is not really a classical station, and they're still dealing with the fallout from WRAS & GPB, and they just changed their lineup on January 12th (announced on Dec.12th)...when was the sample period? Was it after that? Certainly would explain a big drop. They could easily be losing a lot of classical listeners but priming themselves to gain more news/talk listeners.
