Colorado
– where the recreational use of marijuana is legal – just got its second “pot
lifestyle” radio station: KBUD AM 1550 & FM translator at 94.1. It is SMOKIN’
94.1 – the home of 4:20 News and Big
Hits. [LINK]
I
know this isn’t a big deal but I find the whole idea of a for-real
all-things-pot radio station fascinating. Seriously, I never thought I’d ever
see this happen. SMOKIN’ 94.1 lit up
the airwaves for the first time Monday, June 1, 2015.
Marco
Broadcasting operates SMOKIN’ 94.1. The
programming originates on 1550 AM, licensed to Golden, just west of Denver in
the foothills. The AM programming is then repeated on FM translator K231BQ –
94.1. The 250-watt translator transmits
from 2,000 feet and covers a good slice of Metro Denver:
COLORADO’S FIRST POT
STATION IS NO LONGER ON THE AIR
Last
April 16 we reported about the debut K-HIGH,
1580 AM in Colorado Springs. [LINK] K-HIGH didn’t last long. According to
press reports, on May 16 K-HIGH ceased
broadcasting and became an online-only station.
K-HIGH vanished from the airwaves
because there was not enough ad revenue to keep it going. Local authorities were fine with K-HIGH. Press reports had this revealing
quote from one of the station’s on-air hosts:
I smoke on the air pretty much
throughout the day.
I
guess those Federal drug-free workplace rules don’t apply in Colorado.
WHAT SMOKIN’ 94.1 SOUNDS LIKE
SMOKIN’ 94.1 is 24/7 thinking about getting stoned, being stoned, screwing while being stoned and places to
buy more weed. Hosts include Ed Blaze, Gary Ganja and Stoney Reynolds.
MUSIC:
Classic rock songs that EVERYBODY knows: Tom Petty, Aerosmith, Hendrix, Led Zep,
Queen and Foreigner. Surprisingly, old boomer
tunes. Almost entirely up tempo MALE rockers.
No girls, except Pat Benatar. No
sissies, except Queen.
HOSTS: Dumber than Dumb & Dumber. Less
articulate than Beavis & Butthead. SMOKIN’
94.1’s jocks make Garth and Wayne seem like Rhodes Scholars.
GARY GANJA |
SMOKIN’ 94.1 pipes in Bubba the Love Sponge for morning drive.
OUTLOOK: Denver is a much bigger
market than The Springs. No doubt there
is LOTS of weed money in Denver. But, I fail to see a sober business plan at
work.
We
had friends at our house Monday night. I put the streaming audio feed of SMOKIN’ 94.1 on the speakers. The SMOKIN’
94.1 listening-session lasted less than an hour.
The
OH WOW factor doesn’t last long. Boring-While-Stoned
set in after about 20 minutes. One of my friends said: Is pot the only thing they think about?
Yes it is.
COULD THIS BE MY FUTURE?
I
have this fantasy about applying for work at SMOKIN’ 94.1.
My on-air name would be TY STICK.
