Danny Lemos |
Danny
Lemos, a behind-the-scenes player in Los Angeles radio for over three decades,
is the new interim General Manager of Long-Beach LPFM station KLBP 99.1 FM
[link].
He started the job as an unpaid volunteer.
Lemos
is a believer in KLBP’s intensely live and local approach. He told The Long Beach Grunion [LINK] why he took the job:
"I'm just jumping in
to help get the station…up and operating. I love developing new
talent, It's exciting for me.”
"Right now I am
helping them hire directors and coordinating operations. I'm pretty much doing
what I did when I started [in the radio biz].”
Lemos
told The Grunion that he likely would
step down from the GM job once KLBP can afford to hire a full time general
manager. That could be a while. The licensee, Long Beach Community Television & Media
Corporation, has very little money to spare.
Lemos’
is well suited for the assignment because his mish-mash background that combines big-market commercial radio and noncom radio.
At his “day job” he is Student Media
Coordinator at California State University Long Beach.
According
to his LinkedIn page [link], Lemos started in LA radio in the 70s at proud
and loud noncom rocker KXLU.
After that, he had on-air hosting jobs at KMET
and stations in northern California.
His biggest gig was at KIIS-FM in LA, at a time when it was the most
listened-to radio station in America. Lemos was a producer for Rick Dees
morning show. He played Chuy, one of the reoccurring characters on Dee’s show.
He
listed some of the jobs he has done on his LinkedIn page:
Air personality, dee-jay,
Promotions Manager, Traffic Manager, Music Director, Asst. Program Director,
Morning Show Writer, Comedy Staff Producer, Writer and Performer, Stand Up
Comic, Audience Warm-Up Comic, Syndicated Music Show Producer & Headwriter,
Television Writer, and Executive Producer, and Host.
Lemos
is also involved in non-profit fundraising as a volunteer and consultant. He
specializes in Non-Profit 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations.
Lemos
will need all of his skills at KLBP.
Though things seem calm now at the Long
Beach Community Television and Media Corporation (LBCTMC), just a couple of
years ago the FCC was ready to pull the license.
The problem was a "contested realignment" a/k/a "a bitter feud" about the internal board structure. The dispute eventually
led to restraining orders and lawsuits.
NIELSEN FALL QUARTER 2019
RATINGS: FORT COLLINS, OXNARD & SANTA BARBARA
Hometown
shops NPR News/Talk KUNC and sister station The Colorado Sound have the largest share of
listening in Fort Collins and Greeley.
KUNC is not likely to become a part of Colorado Public Radio.
Unlike KRCC in Colorado Springs, KUNC is owned by a community-based
501c3.
KCLU
in Thousand Oaks competes in both the Oxnard-Ventura market and the Santa Barbara market.
KCLU has an amazing track record.
Their
success comes from a deep sense of place.
They are part of the bond from the shared experience of living
just outside of Los Angeles.
KCLU is a truly great radio station with awesome storytelling. Their coverage of the recent fires was breathtaking.
