We’ve
had a chance to look over the 2018 Public Radio News Directors (PRNDI) Award
winners and we like the wider scope of the submission categories.
For instance,
PRNDI [link] added a category for Best Multimedia Presentation – because public
radio news now is happening simultaneously on several platforms.
Today we are presenting an overview of the
Awards. We will be focusing on
individual winners that merit deeper coverage after the July 4th
holiday week. You can see and/or download the complete list of the 2018 PRNDI
Award winners here.
Other
newer categories include Enterprise/Investigative stories and a separate category
for Interviews. In the past, Interviews
tended to be lumped into the Talk Show category which has been renamed Call-In
Program. Most of the category descriptions from previous years are still
included in the Awards. A few category
titles have been simplified.
PRNDI
Awards are now judged in six groups, four for different sizes of news staff, a
student division and a new category for independent producers. Some of these changes were made prior to
2018.
KUT, WLRN, NEW HAMPSHIRE
PUBLIC RADIO & WFUV TAKE HOME THE MOST PRNDI AWARDS
It
appears that PRNDI had a large number of shops submitting entries this year. By
our very unofficial count, over 75 different organizations won either First or
Second in this year’s results.
We combined First and Second place winners to tabulate
the total number of Awards for each organization. Here is who won the most Awards in each of
the six divisions:
DIVISION AA – Shops with
16 or more full-time news employees
KUT,
Austin, won Awards in 6 categories. KCUR won 5. Michigan Radio, Georgia Public
Broadcasting, WBUR and WNYC each won 4.
DIVISION A – Shops with between
8 and 15 full-time news employees
New
Hampshire PR won Awards in 6 categories. WLRN won 5. WNPR won 4.
WPLN and WUWM each won 3.
DIVISION B – Shops with between
4 and 7 full-time news employees
WGCU,
Fort Myers and North Country Public Radio each won Awards in 4 categories. WMUK,
Kalamazoo, and Northeast Public Radio (WFCR) in Amherst, each won 3.
DIVISION C – Shops with between
1 and 3 full-time news employees
WFUV,
New York, and WKMS in Murray, Kentucky each won Awards in 5 categories.
WPSU,
College Station won 4. KAZU, Monterrey,
won 3.
STUDENT DIVISION
Fordham
University via WFUV won Awards in 3 categories.
INDEPENDENT DIVISION
Out There, a podcast company based
in Colorado won an Award for the episode The
