RADIO LISTENING DEFLATION IN NYC & BOSTON

Today we have just released Nielsen Audio PPM estimates for September in five essential noncom markets: New York, Los Angeles, Washington DC, Boston and Minneapolis – St. Paul. In the charts below I compare September numbers with Fall 2014, roughly a year ago.

In New York and Boston I noticed that the weekly cumulative audience fell for almost all of the public radio stations listed. In New York four of the five stations lost more than 100,000 estimated listeners. Four out of five stations in Boston also lost weekly cumulative listeners, led by WBUR’s drop of 74,000.

Weekly Cume is the metric to follow to see this trend.  This number is a real number, taken from the entire 6+ universe.  AQH is the share of people using radio, not the entire population.

This trend is not seen in Los Angeles where KCRW continues to add listeners and other public radio stations are doing well.

FORMAT NOTE: I am now using the term Progressive Rock instead of Triple A, AAA , A3 or “Music Discovery.”  Progressive Rock says what it is in positive language listeners can use and understand.  The other terms are too insider.
