If you want an example of how screwed up Pacifica Radio has become look no further than talk-show host Gary Null. He is a longtime talk show host on WBAI in New York, KPFK in LA and WPFW in Washington, DC. On his daily Pacifica program, Null attacks the medical community, promotes a range of alternative cancer treatments and denies that HIV causes AIDS. Then he promotes his own dietary supplements to Pacifica’s listeners.
GARY NULL |
Now Null appears to be putting up a “force field” to protect his broadcasting turf. He told listeners of his December 8th program that he us preparing “significant litigation” against Pacifica. He said he is in possession of “compelling evidence” of wrong doing at Pacifica. You can hear his on-air announcement here [link].
Though he isn’t revealing the specifics of his charges, speculation is that Null is making a preemptive move to assure that Pacifica will not drop his program. His airtime is his lifeline. His charges may be related to almost 5,000 unsent premiums from the fall 2015 WBAI pledge drive. In the past Pacifica has used Null’s potions as premiums.
WHO PUT THIS QUESTIONABLE GUY ON THE AIR IN THE FIRST PLACE?
Gary Null is part of the public face of Pacifica despite being called "one of the nation's leading promoters of dubious treatment for serious disease." It is time, way past time, for Pacifica to realize that credibility counts. Hosts like Null reinforce the image that Pacifica is not a credible source of information. Null has built a career of selling remedies, supplements and alternative medical advice. It appears he has personally profited off of sales from his products used as thank you gifts on his radio show.
This is not broadcasting in the public interest and it should stop. Now.
Looks like Null may have finally filed a lawsuit against Pacifica and others. If you're interested, check out Chris Albertson's WBAI blog.
