WFUV
in New York and 89.3 The Current in
the Twin Cities lead the pack of public radio’s Adult Alternative, Alt Rock and
Americana stations according to analysis of Nielsen Audio’s 2019 monthly
ratings.
Spark News reviewed Nielsen PPM
data from April 2019 through September 2019 for 26 full-time contemporary music
stations.
Overall, most of the stations added listeners or remained stable.
WFUV, The Current and KKXT had near
record-high numbers of weekly listeners in the September PPM ratings. Nine of the top ten stations
have Adult Alternative formats. WERS in Boston topped the Alt Rock stations.
(Note that we are using the term “Adult Alternative” instead of “AAA” or “Triple
A.”)
KUTX
in Austin was the only station in the Top 10 that lost estimated weekly
listeners in in the months prior to September.
All
of the stations in the #11 to #19 group added estimated weekly listeners or
remained stable. Sun Radio, an
amalgam of five lower power signals around Austin, appears to be nearing the
number of weekly listeners that KUTX has in the market.
Alt
Rock Radio K in Minneapolis had their
highest weekly cume in recent memory.
89.3
The Current draws a larger AQH share than any station we examined. WYEP, WXPN, KKXT
and KEXP maintained or added AQH shares.
In
addition to loosing weekly listeners, KUTX also had declining AQH shares in
every month we examined between April and September.
Adult
Alternative, Alt Rock and Americana stations typically have lower AQH shares
than NPR News/Talk and Classical stations. Alt Rock noncom stations tend to
have smaller AQH shares than other companion formats. All of the stations in
the #11 - #20 list appear stable in AQH shares.
Meanwhile,
we tracked seven stations that broadcast on HD channels.
To the best of out knowledge, none of
the seven stations simulcast their HD programming on a FM translator. FM is where the listeners are.
None
of the stations had enough listening to surpass Nielsen’s minimum threshold for
0.1 AQH share.
