WVGU
is the hometown station but you’d never know it by the ratings. Michigan
Radio (WUOM, Ann Arbor) puts special emphasis on Grand Rapids because they
know they are reaching a lot of folks in the Furniture City. WVGU’s situation
looks like what would happen if Grand Valley State played the Michigan Wolverines
in football. They are in different leagues.
Religious
broadcaster WCSG is the media flagship of Cornerstone Church, pioneers of the
Contemporary Christian Music (“CCM”) format.
Other interesting noncoms in Grand Rapids are Triple A WYCE, Classical
WBLU and WPRR AM & FM [link]. WPRR –
Public Reality Radio – is an in-your-face Community station with a definite
agenda.

Though
KUNM is licensed to the University of New Mexico, it operates like an
old-school Community station complete with the rancor and drama. You might recall we covered [link] the
legendary incident when KUNM fired a volunteer live on the air during a
programming purge. Freeform music is
still heard on KUNM today.
KANW
is actually two stations: half of the day is NPR News and the other half is
locally hosted Regional Mexican music such as Ranchero. Without looking at the details it is hard to
know the size of the audiences. The high cume rating shows that KANW has eager
and loyal listeners.
KHFM
is Classical and is one of the very few commercial Classical stations left in
the nation. The only other commercial
classical stations I can think of are WFMT, Chicago and WRR, Dallas.

WIEE
is one of the most unique noncom stations I have seen recently. WIEE calls
itself The Superstation. It airs an amazingly tasty menu of all
Louisiana musical styles such as Cajun and Jazz. They throw in Reggae, Soul and
Gospel for additional flavor.
WIEE
is a community licensee that signed on in 2011. The have an excellent online
service. Check them out at [link].

WCRI Block Island RI is a commercial classical station, as is WFCC on Cape Cod.
ReplyDeleteThere's also KING in Seattle, but I forget if they relicensed their commercial-band frequency to operate as non-comm/non-profit...I think they did but I'm not sure.
