As
you probably know, the Public Media Journalists Association (PMJA) conference
was cancelled this year because of safety concerns.
Now PMJA is taking elements
of the conference online, including the results of the annual PMJA Awards
Contest.
The
Virtual Awards Gala will happen on Thursday, June 26th at 8:00pm ET.
The online event is free and
participants must register before they attend. Registration in formation is
available here.
PMJA’s
awards are notable for several reasons. They honor the work of journalists in
markets of all sizes. Some content developers listen carefully to the winning
entries to find emerging new talent. Also the PMJA Awards are the only “all
system” event at a time when the public radio family needs it.
The
Awards recognize journalists competing in over two-dozen categories. New
categories have been added this year.
According to Terry Gildea, Executive
Director of PMJA, said there are a few changes in the awards process this year.
The category Call-in Shows is now
called Audience Engagement Programs and they recognize shows with all types of audience
participation. Also new this year is a Student Multi-Media Presentation
category.
Also
during the Virtual Awards Gala, Maria Hinojosa will receive the 2020 Leo C. Lee
award and Kate Concannon will receive PMJA’s 2020 Editor of the Year award. New
members of the PMJA board will be announced during the webinar.
Just prior to the Virtual Awards Gala, the NONCOMM
Thursdays will feature a live
performance by Bruce Hornsby.
Hornsby is perhaps best known for his hit songs such
as Walking in Memphis and The Way It Is.
He is admired within
the music biz for his mixtures of classical, jazz, bluegrass and gospel
music.
Also
during this week’s NONCOMM Thursdays,
WXPN’s Bruce Warren will spin The Big
Wheel of Topics, an opportunity for participants to discuss topics that are
important to them.
NONCOM
Thursdays happens 6:00pm ET. Registration and more information can be found here.
